The zonation and ecology of a sand-dune spider community

چکیده
Despite being a harsh environment, sand dunes are rich in invertebrates, with about 30% (188 species) of the British spider fauna represented (Duffey, 1968), and 53 species being strongly associated with coasts (Ratcliffe, 1977). Arachnologists have examined spider communities in relation to the seral succession of plant communities on sand dunes (e.g. Lowrie, 1948; Barnes, 1953; Perttula, 1984). Several factors influence the spider communities found, including plant diversity, cover, life form and distribution (Duffey, 1968; Uetz, 1991), as well as temperature, humidity and wind velocity (Almquist, 1973a,b). On the south Lancashire sand dunes, Mackie (1967) and Felton (1993) found that, although the majority of spiders collected are common throughout Britain, two notably rare coastal specialists occur. These are Attulus saltator (Simon) (Salticidae) and Argenna patula (Simon) (Dictynidae) which inhabit open sandy places and the strandline (Felton, 1993). The aim of this paper is to explore the relationships between the structure and diversity of the four major plant zones and the spider communities which are found in each of those areas.

Hierarchical organization of a Sardinian sand dune plant community
Coastal sand dunes have attracted the attention of plant ecologists for over a century, but they have largely relied on correlations to explain dune plant community organization. We examined long-standing hypotheses experimentally that sand binding, inter-specific interactions, abiotic factors and seedling recruitment are drivers of sand dune plant community structure in Sardinia, Italy. Removi...

Nowadays, new materials are widely used for improving the bearing capacity of the soils and geosynthetics include the type of these materials which are utilized in this regard. In addition, the geofoam panel type of geosyntethic materials is useful and an alternative for backfill in retaining wall or pavement layers. The present research mainly aimed to investigate sthe effects of geofoam parti...

Introduction About 1/4th of the world deserts is covered with Aeolian sand (McKee, 1979; Ghadiry et al., 2012). Sand dunes are considered as one of the most important geomorphic features of such environments the formation of which shows the abundant resources of sand, the sand-moving powerful wind and the suitable conditions for sediment deposit (Tsoar, 2001; Michel et al, 2018). The most sign...

Stabilizng sand dunes has been one of the main challenges in the arid regions. So far, different kinds of mulches have been used extensively for sand dune stabilization. This study was carried out to determine the optimum composition, concentration and thickness of clay mulch for sand dune stabilization. For this purpose two soil samples from clay flats of a playa with different amount of salin...
